Doctor AntiVirus for Windows 95
This is a shareware version of Doctor for Windows 95, our new
anti-virus program for Microsoft's Windows 95. This release has
full virus scanning capability including real-time scanning, however,
cleaning viruses is limited to only floppy boot sectors. Later versions
released in October will have full virus removal capability.
Why use it?
One of Doctor's main features is its ability to do real-time scanning
of floppies and executables. 'Real-time' means that it operates in the
background, much like a DOS based device driver. It detects and scans
floppies, as well as detecting and scanning programs being executed.
What makes real-time scanning so exceptional under 95 is the ability
to scan for all viruses including rare and polymorphic viruses as
opposed to only a few selected viruses using a DOS based device driver.
The alternative to real-time scanning is on-demand scanning.
'On-demand' means that the user initiates the scan by clicking on
an icon or a menu choice. This option is very effective but only
works well if the user remembers to run the scan.
Pre Windows 95 anti-virus programs will not run properly under
Windows 95. They can not deal properly with long file names, and
they can not perform real-time scanning under Windows 95.
Most of the existing viruses are still a problem under Windows 95.
Boot viruses precede the operating system into memory at boot time,
and thus will still infect a hard drive. Program viruses will still
infect normally within a DOS box. The only significant anti-virus
boost comes from the fact that stealth viruses in many cases won't
work. They get too far into the operating system, and make too many
assumptions about compatibility. Our experiments with Frodo, for
example, show that the DOS box simply hangs.
Because this version is shareware, no technical support will be
given until the software is registered. On-line help is available inside the
Windows scanner.
For information on new features or possible problems please review
release notes.
